What to Say When You Don't Drink: 25 Lines That Actually Work

"Why aren't you drinking?" It's a simple question, but if you don't have an answer ready, it can make a whole night awkward. You hesitate, you over-explain, and suddenly someone's handing you a beer "just to be social."

The fix is easy: have a line ready. Here are 25 that work, grouped by situation.

Three rules first

  1. Say it once, say it short, change the subject. The longer you explain, the more people negotiate.
  2. Have a drink in your hand. A full glass ends most questions before they start.
  3. Don't make it about them. "I'm not drinking" works. "You guys drink too much" doesn't.

At the bar with friends

  1. "I'm good, I've got an early lift tomorrow."
  2. "Doing a 30-day thing. Ask me in a month."
  3. "I'm driving tonight."
  4. "Already got one." (raise your soda water)
  5. "Not tonight. What are you having?"

When someone keeps pushing

  1. "Appreciate it, man. Still no."
  2. "I'm good. Seriously." (smile, eye contact, move on)
  3. "You'll thank me when I drive you home."
  4. "Let's see who feels better tomorrow."

At work

  1. "I've got an early start, sticking to this."
  2. "Not drinking at the moment — training block."
  3. "Happy to be the one who remembers the speeches."

On a date

  1. "I don't drink much these days — I like actually remembering the night."
  2. "I'm doing a no-alcohol month. Want to try their mocktail with me?"
  3. "I'd rather be sharp tonight."

With family

  1. "I'm good, Mom. Pass the potatoes."
  2. "Taking a break from it. I feel great."
  3. "Ask me again in February."

When you want to shut it down

  1. "No thanks."
  2. "I don't drink."
  3. "I'm all set."

When someone asks if you have "a problem"

  1. "No, I just like how I feel without it."
  2. "Nope. Just a performance thing."
  3. "Nope — better sleep and better lifts."
  4. "Funny how nobody asks why you ARE drinking."

What to do if they push a third time

At that point, it's about them, not you. You don't need a better argument. Change the subject or change the room: "I'm grabbing food — want anything?"

Pick three

Don't try to memorize 25 lines. Pick one for friends, one for work and one for family. Say them out loud once. That's enough.
